Eat & Drink

See below for a list of eateries with pastries.

Some pretty popular confectionary delights can be found here, in St. Landry Parish. Visit the Sweet Dough Pie Capital of the World, Grand Coteau, and you’ll stumble upon The Kitchen Shop. There, pastry chef, Nancy Brewer, is in the kitchen whipping up a fresh batch of buttery scones or her famous, Gateau NaNa, a buttery dessert filled with pecans. Allow that sweet smell to lead you further down the road to P&D’s Cake Cottage where Pauline and Donna’s baked goods could be labeled, “Almost too pretty to eat.” Though much of their time is spent making special occasion cakes, hungry passersby can grab a cake by the slice.  Yam Country Pies Sweet Potatoes

Every October in this historic little town visitors can bite into homemade sweet dough pies filled with local, seasonal ingredients such as fig and sweet potato at the Annual Sweet Dough Pie Festival. However, any other day of the year those looking for something sweet can still indulge in this regional treat at Yam Country Pies in Opelousas. The long time participants and 1st place winners of the annual festival now have their own store front where these half-moon shaped pies are made fresh, daily.

Why stop there? Head further west to the Cajun prairie of Eunice, Louisiana where Ray’s Bakery has been honing their pastry and bread making skills for 50 years. Particularly famous for their pocket bread and French loaves the family owned business also knows the recipe for delicious pies, cookies, and cakes. It goes without saying, wherever the road takes you, you’ll always find something sweet in St. Landry Parish.

    The Kitchen Shop

Kitchen enthusiasts will find every gadget imaginable in this local store that has been around for 30+ years.  Shoppers can also peruse books, wine, gourmet foods, linens, greeting cards, pottery and items for the garden and bath. Enjoy a delicious Gateau Na Na prepared daily by Pastry Chef Nancy Brewer or order gourmet coffee and sweet dough pie, and enjoy an afternoon break.

Pastry Chef Nancy Brewer learned how to make dough from her Grandmother Doucet. Her career involved a stint in New York but now she's at home making a lighter, richer and less thick pastry than is less common in Acadiana.
