    Bourré at The Brewery

A Sunday afternoon at Bayou Teche Brewing is a great way to meet the locals. Each week the brewery hosts a front porch jam session, a French table, and a friendly game of Bourré. Bourré is a popular card game in South Louisiana. It's a trick-taking game, similar to Spades. If you don't know how the play, the locals will be happy to show you and even teach you a few new phrases at the French table. Local Cajun and Creole musicians often take a Sunday break to participate in the jam, a very casual gathering open to anyone with an instrument.

    Drum Circle at NUNU

For a spiritual and social experience, participate in a community drum circle at NUNU Arts & Cultural Collective in Arnaudville. Drum circles were made popular by counterculture groups in the 60's and 70's as means of expression. Today a community drum circle is still a social gathering where the music completely improvised and open to self-expression. The drum circle at NUNU is open to all ages, 10 and up. You need only a percussion instrument and a little creativity. The sessions are one hour, and anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by an adult. The group leader is Clare Hernandez, and she invites all levels of drummers to join in. Some instruments will be provided.

    Cajun Country Mardi Gras Celebration

This unique five-day celebration is not your typical idea of Mardi Gras with beads and doubloons. In fact, you won’t find these trinkets in sight, but instead, men and women on horseback donned in hand-crafted wire masks, tall hats called capuchons, and very distinctive costumes. This one of a kind celebration begins the Friday before Mardi Gras Day, but the main event is the Courir de Mardi Gras procession or “chicken run” which involves chasing a live chicken to collect for a community gumbo, and silliness by revelers all day. Don’t wait till Fat Tuesday to join in the fun. Throughout the weekend, experience the town’s rural traditions with jam sessions, street dances, cooking demos, Mardi Gras exhibits, and a special Liberty Theater show. A Lil' Mardi Gras run for children and teenagers is held Sunday, as well as an old time boucherie (hog butchering).

The Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras dates back from when the town was first established in the late 19th century. The Courir was abandoned for a few years during World War II, but in 1946 a small band of riders revived the tradition. Today, the Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras has more than 2,000 participants on the run, and it continues to increase each year.
