    Cajun Country Mardi Gras Celebration

This unique five-day celebration is not your typical idea of Mardi Gras with beads and doubloons. In fact, you won’t find these trinkets in sight, but instead, men and women on horseback donned in hand-crafted wire masks, tall hats called capuchons, and very distinctive costumes. This one of a kind celebration begins the Friday before Mardi Gras Day, but the main event is the Courir de Mardi Gras procession or “chicken run” which involves chasing a live chicken to collect for a community gumbo, and silliness by revelers all day. Don’t wait till Fat Tuesday to join in the fun. Throughout the weekend, experience the town’s rural traditions with jam sessions, street dances, cooking demos, Mardi Gras exhibits, and a special Liberty Theater show. A Lil' Mardi Gras run for children and teenagers is held Sunday as well as an old time boucherie (hog butchering).

The Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras dates back from when the town was first established in the late 19th century. The Courir was abandoned for a few years during World War II, but in 1946 a small band of riders revived the tradition. Today, the Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras has more than 2,000 participants on the run, and it continues to increase each year.

    Eunice Lil' Mardi Gras

The traditional rural Mardi Gras celebration is based on early begging rituals. Riders donned in traditional costumes, masks and hats, also known as capuchons, ride horseback from house to house soliciting “donations” of food items to culminate in a community wide gumbo. This procession or “run” includes chicken chasing and silliness by revelers all day.

Children can get in on the fun as well! The Eunice Lil' Mardi Gras is a chicken run held for children and teens ages 0-14. Participants are broken up into different age groups, and are given an opportunity to catch a live chicken.

    10th Annual Lundi Gras Boucherie

The best way to sample southern Louisiana cuisine is at an old time boucherie. This long tradition began as a way to survive the winter months with plenty of meat. Today it is a community celebration that begins early in the morning with the butchering of the hog. The meat is then prepared for dishes such as boudin, boudin rouge, cracklin, backbone stew, and ponce. Nothing goes to waste – even the bones are used to make hogshead cheese. Taste it all at Lakeview Park & Beach every Lundi Gras, the Monday before Fat Tuesday. Also hear live music in the barn, and practice your Cajun two-step with the locals.

Not sure what these dishes are? Click here for a list of Cajun culinary terms.

Lakeview Park & Beach | 8am-till | Live music starts at 12pm | Free admission but tickets needed for food

32nd Annual World Championship Crawfish Étouffée Cook Off

This event features professional and amateur cooks vying for the title of "World Champion." This has got to be one of the best ways to taste crawfish in Louisiana. Teams compete to see who can cook the best crawfish etouffee in three categories: Amateur, Professional and Club/Organization. Also, enjoy live Cajun and zydeco music (starting at 10AM), plenty of dancing and, of course, tons of etouffee. There will also be arts and crafts, a petting zoo, pony rides, fun jumps, and more fun activities for the whole family!
