    La Table Jeunesse

    Students of French wishing to socialize with other area French language students, and just have fun are invited to attend La Table Jeunesse. 

    Whether immersion or second-language, it makes no difference. Here all are practitioners of French, and all French is good French. As meetings progress, participants - you - will have input on games to be played, activities to devise, those things you wish to do - and of course - en français

    Bourré at The Brewery

    A Sunday afternoon at Bayou Teche Brewing is a great way to meet the locals. Each week the brewery hosts a front porch jam session, a French table, and a friendly game of Bourré. Bourré is a popular card game in South Louisiana. It's a trick-taking game, similar to Spades. If you don't know how the play, the locals will be happy to show you and even teach you a few new phrases at the French table. Local Cajun and Creole musicians often take a Sunday break to participate in the jam, a very casual gathering open to anyone with an instrument.

    Bayou Teche Brewing a is an eco-friendly microbrewery in Arnaudville, Louisiana. The brewmaster is using locally grown ingredients and crafting ales that complement the cuisine of the region, Cajun and Creole food. Bayou Teche Brewing is open to for tours in French and English seven days a week and also offers samples in the tap room!

    Zydeco Dance Lessons

    Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas is hosting free Zydeco dance lessons! All you need is one hour with an instructor to learn a few moves, then you're ready for live concerts at local festivals or zydeco dance halls. Lessons are taught by CuRobiks instructor, Miss Eva Noel, and the Zydeco Ballers, a local zydeco dance club. 

    Zydeco is a genre of music that became popular in the 80's by legendary Louisiana artists such as Clifton Chenier or Terrance Simien. Opelousas, Louisiana is the Zydeco Music Capital of the World and is widely known for its famous dancehalls, clubs, and zydeco trail rides.

    Opelousas Farmers' Market

    Shop for local, home-grown produce at the Opelousas Farmers' Market. Opelousas, Louisiana is a major agricultural community. In the mid 20th Century the town was even known as the Yam Capital of the World. Today you can still try an Opelousas sweet potato and even take home some collards and mustard greens, kale, carrots, honey, and squashes when in season. The Opelousas Farmer's Market is open throughout the year every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.     Eunice Farmers' Market

    Find farm-fresh produce year-round at the Downtown Farmer's Market in Eunice, Louisiana.     36th Annual Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival

    Opelousas is the Zydeco Music Capital of the World and home to one of the biggest zydeco music celebrations, The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival. For over 35 years this annual event has honored zydeco music fans with a Bloody Mary Zydeco Breakfast and a day-long lineup of South Louisiana's trending zydeco musicians. This music concert is also popular for its authentic plate lunches and Creole cuisine.

    1981, fearful that Creole and zydeco music was dying out, a group of concerned citizens organized the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival. Today, the event features the best in zydeco in addition to some swamp-pop, swing, R&B, and southern soul artists.

    Friday, August 31 - Zydeco Kick-Off Dance 
    The kick-off dance takes place at Evangeline Downs and features music by Mike Broussard & Nu' Edition Zydeco. 

    Saturday, Sept 1 - Zydeco Breakfast
    The Annual Zydeco Breakfast is Saturday morning, hosted by the City of Opelousas. Bring your lawn chair to enjoy live entertainment in a relaxed and charming setting in the heart of downtown Opelousas. Last year’s breakfast included Bloody Mary’s, coffee, Clifton Chenier Casserole, and pancakes. There will be live music by Cupid and Koray Broussard & The Zydeco Unit.

    Friday Night Live Concert Series

    Friday Night Live is a concert series features local zydeco, R&B, and soul artists at Evangeline Downs Racetrack. The series is hosted by Stephanie Smallwood, the host of Z105.9's The At Work Network. Stephanie is a seasoned professional with over 30 years of broadcast experience. She brings her love and passion for local music to Evangeline Downs every Friday night, featuring her favorite artists and bands for a live concert. 

    Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino is located in Opelousas, Louisiana, just off Interstate 49. This gaming facility offers live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing, concerts, dining, and rooms and suites at the Evangeline Downs Hotel.

    Zydeco Breakfast

    In preparation of the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival, the Zydeco Breakfast is back again with live music and delicious offerings from local downtown businesses. This year's entertainment includes Cupid, known for the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Cupid Shuffle", and Koray Broussard & Zydeco Unit. Vendors will feature an assortment of breakfast menu items for sale from Bloody Marys and coffee to Clifton Chenier Casserole and pancakes. Local restaurants and bars around the Courthouse Square include Java Square, Back in Time Restaurant, Palace Café, and The Brass Rail. So bring your lawn chairs, and enjoy the entertainment in a relaxed and charming setting in the heart of downtown Opelousas.

    Old Fashioned Fais-do-do Barn Dances

    Lakeview Park & Beach is known to throw an amazing party whether it be Mardi Gras, Black Pot Camp, or one of their Saturday night Old Fashioned Fais Do-Do barn dances. This rustic barn is the perfect setting for foot-stompin' and two-steppin' to live Cajun and zydeco music. Acadian’s best performers are known to frequent the barn stage, including Grammy-nominated bands. So come out and pass a good time with the locals. During summer months also enjoy live music on the beach. 

    Campers receive four free armbands for the beach and two free tickets to the Barn dance. Non-campers can purchase a day pass armband for $10 on weekends, $7 on weekdays, and $5 on Tuesdays that allows you access to the beach, beach playground, fishing lake, and any beach entertainment.

    Rendez-vous des Cajuns

    The Liberty Theatre's weekly Rendez-vous des Cajuns is on every Cajun music fan's bucket list and has been attracting curious tourists for decades. It is a live radio show hosted in Eunice, Louisiana, home to some of Louisiana's most popular Cajun music artists and the Cajun French Music Hall of Fame & Museum.

    Every Saturday, in the 
    Prairie Home Companion format, the show hosts a different Cajun, zydeco, or Creole music band. The show's emcee host each program in Louisiana French with just enough English spoken for the audience to follow along. Those ready to brush up on their Cajun waltz or two-step can take a dance partner on the Liberty Theatre stage. Be sure to add this Saturday tradition to your Louisiana itinerary!
