Music & Mic with The Ricks
Festival of Words hosts an evening of Music & Mic with the jazz duo, The Ricks. The Ricks music group is a father and son duo composed of Ricky Julien Sr. (woodwinds) and Ricky Julien Jr. (brasswinds). The Ricks have been performing throughout the Louisiana and Texas for approximately 3 years. The duo’s repertoire includes jazz, funk, rhythm and blues, country, classical, and even bluegrass. The Ricks can be heard as the horn section on Legendary Bluesman, Mr. Jude Taylor’s, 2016 release “Everything is going to Be Alright!”
Sunset/Grand Coteau native Ricky Julien Sr. has performed with and/or recorded with many Louisiana music legends including
Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble, Keith Frank & The Soileau Zydeco Band, and Leon Chavis. He has also worked, behind the scenes, as stage coordinator, production manager, and sound production lead engineer/mixer for well-known artists such as Percy Sledge, The Temptations, and Ruth Brown.
In 2015 and 2017, Ricky Julien Jr. placed 1st overall out of 500 musicians at the world-renowned Southern University Human Juke Box Camp. Ricky Julien Jr. has studied with Wes Anderson (principal alto saxophonist for Wynton Marsalis), Dr. Harry Anderson, Dr. Herman Jackson, and other great clinicians and educators. In 2015, Mr. was selected to attend NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts). Ricky Julien Jr. has recently acquired a band scholarship from Southern University Marching. He plans to attend Southern University to study Law and Music.
The musical performance will be followed by an open mic of music, poetry, stories, and whatever you wish to share.
This free, community event is suitable for all ages and is sponsored by The Festival of Words Cultural Arts Collective. The venue is made available through the generosity of Chicory’s Coffee & Cafe.
