Voices from our Past: St. Landry Catholic Church Cemetery Tours
Spend some time with voices from the past and hear their stories. Some are happy and some are sad, but each will leave you wanting to know more. In its 14th year, tour reenactors will transport you back in time focusing on a chosen time period in Opelousas history.
This year's theme is "Leaders & Legends". The tour will include spirits such as Sister Madeline Sophie Hebert of the Holy Cross; criminal defense attorney, Edward P. Veazie; orphan train rider, Johnny Vidrine; Ella Collins, wife of the City Marshall, and many more colorful St. Landry Parish personalities from the past. The actress played by Miss Collins will perform her line in French! Who will you meet on the tour?
Nina Celestine Delarue Chachere, wife of Tillman George Chachere, a well-known architect. Sister Madeline Sophie Hebert, of the Sisters of the Marinates of the Holy Cross Edward P. Veazie, Assistant District Attorney Johnny Vidrine, an Orphan Train rider Antoine Simien and Marie Madalene LeMelle Simien, a successful business owner from France and his wife John Thistlewaite, owner of Opelousas' newspaper Harvard Cochise Collins and Ella Collins, City Marshall and his wife
All proceeds from the cemetery tours fund the Cemetery Historical Restoration Project. The tours began in 2003 and, to date, 30+ gravesites have been restored. Additionally, signage has been added. In 2012, reenactors said their part an average of 17 times. Come to Opelousas for this unique experience and contribute to maintaining history.
