    Lighting of the Village

Every year the village is set aglow with lights and enough holiday cheer for all. The evening begins with an upbeat melody of rhythm by members of the Opelousas High School marching band followed by the official “pulling of the switch,” which will illuminate thousands of lights in the village. Offering a variety of activities for the little ones, the annual lighting event will include a petting zoo, choir music, an obstacle course fun jump, a cupcake decorating station, and an ornament making station where kids can design their own holiday ornaments. Special guests for the event include Frosty the Snowman, Queen Elsa, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Elmo and Balloon Man Rick Hessler. And of course, Santa Clause will be on site and holiday photos with Santa will be offered.

The Village stays lit through January 1, 2016 for the public to enjoy.

    Bringing Amédé Home

On March 11, 2018, nearly 500 music fans, locals, and Ardoin family descendants welcomed Amédé Ardoin home.

Bringing Amédé Home was a symbolic ceremonial event for an iconic Louisiana musician, Amédé Ardoin. The ceremony featured a candlelit Remembrance Vigil, a Bal du Dimanche après-midi (Sunday afternoon house dance), and the unveiling of the Amédé Ardoin Commemorative, a forged steel statue of the legendary accordionist, made by sculptural artist, Russell Whiting.

Folk artists, musicians, and relatives of Amédé Ardoin participated in the March 11th event. Local music expert, Herman Fuselier, was the Master of Ceremonies, and microbrewer, Bayou Teche Brewing commemorated the event with a keg of craft beer.

Ardoin was one of the earliest musicians to record his la la style of Creole music in the 20s and 30s and is widely regarded as the bedrock of today’s Cajun and Creole music. Inspired by the Ardoin family’s efforts to “bring him home” from his burial place in an unmarked grave at the Central Louisiana Hospital in Pineville, the Amédé Ardoin Project Committee formed with the purpose of symbolically bringing him home through this public memorial.

The memorial, a 1,500 lb. steel statue, displays Ardoin standing high atop his most cherished item, his accordion. In his right hand he holds out a bronze lemon, a reference to Ardoin's practice of carrying a lemon in his pocket for his singing voice. The Amédé Ardoin Commemorative is available for viewing at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Information Center in Opelousas, Louisiana. The center is located on Interstate 49 at Exit 23.

The Amédé Ardoin Project Committee will continue their efforts with an environmental project and a Louisiana music education initiative. For more information about the Committee please call, 337-351- 4406.

For more information about The Amédé Ardoin Commemorative, please call The St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission (SLPTC) at 337-948-8004. For a media contact, please ask for Caitlin Bussey.

SLPTC is the official destination marketing organization tasked with the purpose of promoting tourism in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.
