    Lighting of the Village

Every year the village is set aglow with lights and enough holiday cheer for all. The evening begins with an upbeat melody of rhythm by members of the Opelousas High School marching band followed by the official “pulling of the switch,” which will illuminate thousands of lights in the village. Offering a variety of activities for the little ones, the annual lighting event will include a petting zoo, choir music, an obstacle course fun jump, a cupcake decorating station, and an ornament making station where kids can design their own holiday ornaments. Special guests for the event include Frosty the Snowman, Queen Elsa, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Elmo and Balloon Man Rick Hessler. And of course, Santa Clause will be on site and holiday photos with Santa will be offered.

The Village stays lit through January 1, 2016 for the public to enjoy.

    Bringing Amédé Home

On March 11, 2018, nearly 500 music fans, locals, and Ardoin family descendants welcomed Amédé Ardoin home.

Bringing Amédé Home was a symbolic ceremonial event for an iconic Louisiana musician, Amédé Ardoin. The ceremony featured a candlelit Remembrance Vigil, a Bal du Dimanche après-midi (Sunday afternoon house dance), and the unveiling of the Amédé Ardoin Commemorative, a forged steel statue of the legendary accordionist, made by sculptural artist, Russell Whiting.

Folk artists, musicians, and relatives of Amédé Ardoin participated in the March 11th event. Local music expert, Herman Fuselier, was the Master of Ceremonies, and microbrewer, Bayou Teche Brewing commemorated the event with a keg of craft beer.

Ardoin was one of the earliest musicians to record his la la style of Creole music in the 20s and 30s and is widely regarded as the bedrock of today’s Cajun and Creole music. Inspired by the Ardoin family’s efforts to “bring him home” from his burial place in an unmarked grave at the Central Louisiana Hospital in Pineville, the Amédé Ardoin Project Committee formed with the purpose of symbolically bringing him home through this public memorial.

The memorial, a 1,500 lb. steel statue, displays Ardoin standing high atop his most cherished item, his accordion. In his right hand he holds out a bronze lemon, a reference to Ardoin's practice of carrying a lemon in his pocket for his singing voice. The Amédé Ardoin Commemorative is available for viewing at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Information Center in Opelousas, Louisiana. The center is located on Interstate 49 at Exit 23.

The Amédé Ardoin Project Committee will continue their efforts with an environmental project and a Louisiana music education initiative. For more information about the Committee please call, 337-351- 4406.

For more information about The Amédé Ardoin Commemorative, please call The St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission (SLPTC) at 337-948-8004. For a media contact, please ask for Caitlin Bussey.

SLPTC is the official destination marketing organization tasked with the purpose of promoting tourism in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.

Louisiana Orphan Train Society Annual Gathering

The Louisiana Orphan Train Society Annual Gathering reunites orphan train riders and their descendants at the LA Orphan Train Museum in Opelousas, Louisiana. The museum is one of two in the U.S. dedicated to documenting and preserving the story of the Orphan Train Riders who arrived from the New York Foundling Hospital to Louisiana in the late 19th Century. Because of the increasing number of occupants at the hospital, the Sisters of Charity requested assistance from Catholic families in Louisiana, placing more than 2,000 orphaned children in a new home.

Since the passing of Mrs. Alice Bernard in 2015, then the only known surviving orphan train rider from New York, members and descendants of the riders still gather in her memory at the annual reunion. There, participants exchange their New York orphan stories in an open mic. While you're there, view some of the artifacts on display and take a tour with Miss Flo.

You need only a percussion instrument and a little creativity. The sessions are one hour, and anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by an adult. Country Antique Store Estate Sale

Petite Rouge Antiques and Estate Sales is holding a four-day estate sale event in historic Washington, Louisiana. Formerly a country store, the building is full of antiques including a very large collection of iron collectibles, chandeliers, kitchenware, apothecary items, mid-century furniture, pianos, soda bottles, books, comics, and more.

The old country store on Highway 71 was first purchased by Hazel and Herbert Artigue in 1953. Hazel borrowed $50 to open her small grocery selling milk, bread, and basic household items. In the early 60s, the store closed due to Hazel's health. In the late 60's the Artigue family struggled financially after Herbert was injured on the job while working in construction on the Mississippi River Bridge. The couple needed a way to make ends meet and decided to combine Hazel's love of antiques with Hebert's passion for woodworking. Making repairs for a living, the Artigue's were finally able to save enough money to attend auctions. Soon Hazel and Hebert's small grocery evolved becoming an antiques and upholstery shop, their dream business. In the 1980's Hebert passed, but Hazel continued to visit the shop to clean and arrange their collection. Hazel passed in 2012, and the couple's collection is now open to antiquers who treat these treasures with the same love and care that the Artigue family once did.
