Fête de la Chaudiere Noir – Black Pot Cook-Off

Prepare your taste buds and mark your calendars for an unforgettable cultural experience! École Saint-Landry invites locals and visitors alike to the Fête de la Chaudiere Noir! – Black Pot Cook-off, a vibrant celebration of Louisiana’s rich heritage. The festival is scheduled to be held at the Sunset Community Center on Saturday, October 25th from 10:30am-3:30pm. This event promises a day filled with family-friendly activities including a silent auction, games, French language trivia, face-painting, train rides, a petting zoo, and French bingo. There will also be live music by Mark Ardoin & Creole Driving Force and Austin Monceaux & the Acadiana Ramblerss, and, of course, the highlight of the festival – the Black Pot Cook-Off.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to tantalize their taste buds with an array of delectable dishes. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or simply a food enthusiast, individuals and teams are invited to showcase their culinary skills in categories such as Meat Dish, Dessert, and Side Dish. With both public and judge’s choice prizes, including cash rewards of up to $200, the competition promises to be fierce and flavorful. The event is free but tasting tickets will be available for $10 per 5 tastings.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the renovation of the historic Sunset High, transforming it into École Saint-Landry’s upper elementary school building. École Saint-Landry is one of only three full French immersion schools in all of Louisiana. We look forward to welcoming you for a day of food, music, and community that promises to be truly unforgettable.

Music at the Depot

The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, an arm of the Jean Lafitte National Park Service, hosts Music at the Museum, a live music series taking place at the Eunice Depot Museum. Dance to live Cajun music with Eunice’s charming museum filled with exhibits and artifacts depicting the lifestyles of early settlers as a backdrop.

On April 13 from 1pm-2pm, Moi, Toi et Lui will perform live.

This is a free event sponsored by the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center.

Music & Market returns to the Opelousas live music scene for a four-week Spring series beginning Thursday, April 20th. The relaunched series will happen on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. on the grounds of the Courthouse Square in downtown Opelousas. Kicking off the series is zydeco and Cajun music fan favorite Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, followed by Don Fontenot and Les Amis (April 27), Cypress Band featuring Willie Tee & Lynn August (May 4) and Leon Chavis & the Zydeco Flames (May 11).

Music & Market is designed to help promote the area’s music heritage and bring attention to local farmers and their produce, a strong component of the culinary trail. Since its inception in 2007, the music series has featured over 120 outdoor performances highlighting a long list of Louisiana musicians including Grammy award winners such as Lost Bayou Ramblers (2017 “Kalenda”), Chubby Carriere (2011 for “Zydeco Junkie”) and Steve Riley (2014 with “Courtbouillon.”)

La Rivière Mardi Gras Chicken Run and Parade

Head to Krotz Springs, Louisiana for the second La Rivière Mardi Gras Chicken Run and Parade taking place right along the Atchafalaya River at Riverview RV Park & Resort.

The parade itself departs at 9am from Riverview RV Park & Resort and heads North on Hwy 105 until it enters the town of Krotz Springs and travels through the town until heading back to Riverview. There will be an intermission at Nall Park with boudin and a bowl of gumbo available at the end. Women and children can participate in the parade but will have a separate chicken chase once the Mardi Gras Run returns to Riverview.

This event is cash only. General Admission is $10 and includes live music once the parade returns. If you’d like to participate in the trail ride it’s $20 and $20 for the chicken run.

Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week

The 24th Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week will take place April 13-17, in Eunice, Louisiana at Lakeview Park & Beach with a Louisiana French Immersion experience at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center that Monday.  Highlights include top-notch Louisiana-style entertainment, education, and hospitality with public and enrollment-based activities.  The schedule, Camp registration, and lodging information are found at LAfolkroots.org.

WHY BALFA WEEK?

Balfa Week classes are immersive, multi-day lessons and workshops that have you studying face-to-face with master musicians, cooks, and craftspeople in a nature-based setting. Spontaneous jams, lakeside campfires, new friends from around the world.

Schedule a one-to-one lesson with Louisiana master musicians to conquer a tune that’s stuck in your head. Discuss the creative process with Louisiana folk craft artisans. Learn some tricks for Louisiana cooking during sessions with regional chefs. Imagine yourself peeling and eating a pile of crawfish. Wander into the nightly barn dances with friends to test out moves you practiced in dance class.

Housing options are available. Bring your RV, rent or share a deluxe cabin, pitch a tent, or stay at a local B&B or hotel. Visit Evangeline Parish Tourism and St. Landry Parish Tourism for more ideas.

Tuition rates range from a Full-Time 5-day rate to a Daily rate.

Sauce Picante Cook-Off

The Sauce Picante Cook-Off taking place at Lakeview Park & Beach in Eunice is an annual cooking event that you won’t want to miss. Sauce Picante is a traditional Creole and Cajun dish that includes a spicy sauce typically with a tomato base all over rice. At this event, area chefs will compete with their best renditions of this iconic dish. Samples will be available for guests to taste and vote on. Cameron Fontenot & the Rhythm Aces will play from 2pm-4pm and Dustin Sonnier & the Wanted is performing in the evening at 8pm.

It’s $15 to enter a dish and $10 for guests to get a wristband and sample all the tasty food.

Le Grand Hoorah

Le Grand Hoorah returns to Lakeview Park in  Eunice, Louisiana on November 1. The lineup of bands features some of the hottest acts from around the region. Enjoy Cajun cuisine, plus French language experiences, dancing, special events, outdoor fun, and optional camping.

“Our festival is about creating and fostering relationships focused on preserving the music, food, language and folk arts of the people of Acadiana,” explained Gilbert “Winky” Aucoin, President of the event’s nonprofit.

The music schedule includes a kickoff party Halloween night at 8pm with One Trick Pony. Then on Saturday, Opening Ceremonies start 12:30pm. Live music kicks off at 1pm and continues till 8:45 pm with performances by Holiday Playgirls, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Savoy Family Band, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, and Le Grand Hoorah Swamp Pop Showcase. 

Attendees can also return Sunday morning for a Catholic French Mass at 9:30 am.

Le Grand Hoorah is known for preserving and supporting its region’s roots. As part of the nonprofit’s mission to support musical and cultural organizations, proceeds each year are in part donated to various organizations including ACA’s (Acadiana Center for the Arts) Courtney Granger Memorial Award, the Christopher Stafford Memorial Foundation Fund, and Love of People this year.

Sounds of Summer

On June 17th from 5pm-8pm, enjoy the “Sounds of Summer” celebration at the Delta Grand Theatre in Opelousas. Listen in as music students from the Louisiana Folk Roots Kids Camp perform at 6pm. Also performing is a local zydeco favorite, Wayne Singleton & Same Ol’ 2-step band.
