Cajun Americana singer-songwriter Dustin Dale Gaspard will perform live at NUNU Art & Culture Collective in Arnaudville on May 30th. Doors open at 6pm and the music stars at 7:30pm. Admission is $20.

After 10 years of performing throughout the deep South, Dustin Dale Gaspard released his full-length debut album “Hoping Heaven Got A Kitchen” in March 2022. The decade that he spent honing his songwriting helped create an album that speaks to the soul of rural roots listeners and alternative folk lovers alike, all while delivering an intimate insight into the Cajun native’s groove felt mysticism. Written for his grandparents, his record displays undeniable heart, love, community and the sonic influence of the land that raised him. Gaspard’s next album, “Avec Le Courrant” is a bilingual folk Americana concept record detailing the story of his Acadian ancestor’s exile during the event know as “Le Grand Derangement”.

Scott Mulvahill, acclaimed bass-playing singer and songwriter, comes to Arnaudville to perform at a listening room show at NUNU Art & Culture Collective. on March 21. Show starts at 7:30, but doors open at 6pm.  Tickets are $20.

Get your cowboy on at the Yambilee in Opelousas on Saturday, March 16th. It’s a battle of the DJs with DJ Potato and Dumb D versus Lil Jack and Titanic. There will also be a zydeco, swing out and bounce contest.

Every third Sunday, from 12pm-2pm, join John Cico as he leads, Cico’s Songwriting Circle. Musicians will share intimate creative exchanges within an art-filled, beautifully renovated space that was once the Singleton’s Hardware and Lumber. John Cico is a singer-songwriter who knows the line between folk, country, and blues with deft fingerstyle guitar and poetic lyricism.

Dr. Walter Davis Sr., Book Signing

On Thursday, Feb. 29, Dr. Walter Davis Sr. reads from his new book, The Journey of a Sharecropper’s Kid.

The book chronicles the struggles and joys of growing up under the Sharecropper system in South Louisiana. The book provides details that take you back to youth in the 1940s and 50s. The story is told through the lens of spirituality; despite hardships, Dr. Davis embraces “blessings of forgiveness.”

Dr. Walter Davis, Sr. was born Jan. 27, 1937 in Port Barre, Louisiana. He has always resided in Louisiana. Today, he is a general contractor and part owner of Triple D Construction company in Opelousas. Davis is a pastor at Believers for Christ Ministry in Opelousas. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Pneuma Theological Seminary of Oakland, California. He and his wife, Rose Mary Manuel Davis, raised nine children.

The event takes place on Feb. 29. Doors open at 5. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. at the Opelousas Museum, 315 N Main St., Opelousas, LA 70570. Following the presentation, Dr. Davis will sign books.

Lil’ Nate L’Argent Chicken Run Dance

Lil’ Nate & the Zydeco Big Timers return to Opelousas, Louisiana to revitalize the traditional L’Argent event with this chicken run dance at the Yambilee. Taking place on the Saturday after Mardi Gras on February 17th from 9pm til the early morning hours of the next day, this event allows you to recapture that Mardi Gras feeling.

On-site there will be a food truck as well as a photo booth so you can eat delicious food while you capture the moment with friends and loved ones. With a cash bar, you can party all night long.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased early here.

Acadiana Junior High & High School Rodeo

The Acadiana Junior High and High School Rodeo is a celebration of rodeo tradition, youth talent, and the vibrant culture of St. Landry Parish. They are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of rodeo champions and providing an unforgettable experience for the community. The even returns to the Yambilee Ag Arena in Opelousas, Louisiana from April 11-13.

The return of this rodeo signifies the growth of rodeo among our younger generation of cowboys and cowgirls. 

This event will highlight the recent improvements at the St. Landry Ag Arena and St. Landry’s recent title of “Equine Capital of Louisiana.” This spring, we are proud to host over 300 families who will gather to participate in and witness the excitement of the rodeo.

The Acadiana Junior High and High School Rodeo promises a showcase of exceptional talent from junior high and high school students from across the state. Get ready for some tough competition and thrilling performances in a variety of rodeo events, including:

  • Barrel Racing
  • Pole Bending
  • Calf Roping
  • Breakaway Roping
  • Team Roping
  • Bull Riding
  • Saddle Bronc Riding
  • Bareback Riding
  • Goat Tying

There’s a $10 Entry Fee, but kids 5 and under get in free. Weekend passes are $15.
