Opelousas Little Theatre

This unsuspecting 1880’s era church has housed hundreds of plays in Opelousas since the Opelousas Little Theatre, a group formed in 1939, made it their home in 1959. The theatre is kept alive by a small group of ferverently dedicated individuals that range from teenagers to decades long members. With plays ranging from Christmas classics to the wonderous world of Lewis Caroll, these local players will put their heart and soul on the stage for its audience. Mary Alice Fontenot’s beloved children’s story character now has a permanent spot in his hometown of Eunice right outside the Eunice Depot Museum as well as the Cajun French Music Hall of Fame Museum. Clovis Crawfish stands proudly as a testament to the children’s books Fontenot brought to life that has taught to the world since 1961 a wonderful understanding of the Cajun French language as well as the colorful characters that populate her worlds.

This informational kiosk, located in Leonville mere steps away from Champagne’s Marche, is one of many along the Teche, and one of two within St. Landry Parish. It details the winding path of the legendary bayou with stories of those who call it their home.

These kiosks were lovingly made by the stewards of the Bayou Teche, the TECHE Project. You can learn more about the TECHE Project’s mission, and the history of the Tech itself, at the TECHE Project’s website.

Teche Vermilion Pumping Station

To the diverse people who live here, bayous are essential to the quality of life, not just a waterway or means of travel, but important to industries, a form of recreation, and an unscathed natural beauty. They provide great fishing spots for outdoor enthusiasts and allow for kayak and canoe races and even festivals to be held year-round. The Teche-Vermilion Pumping station, located in Krotz Springs, Louisiana, was designed to help restore water quality and quantity, protect the regional groundwater supply, and to provide additional water for irrigation. It is vital to keeping these bayous clean and prevents stagnation. The pumps also service boats and other small vessels when the water level is too low to launch. Learn more about Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District and take a personalized tour of the pumping station. You’ll understand the importance of the pumps to our waterways and our people.

Neketta Guillory, the owner of Art Box Studio, is a native of St. Landry Parish and has been an art instructor for over a decade in Opelousas, Louisiana. Her style is vibrant and bold with a blend of influences from her mentor, John T. Scott, a New Orleans-based artist, and her time spent in West Africa. Her work can be viewed and purchased in the gallery next door or you can take lessons from Neketta herself in the studio.

The Art Box offers a wide variety of top-notch services, such as open studio times, poetry readings, music events, private arts and crafts lessons, and a selection of other hands-on learning experiences for adults and children. Check the calendar for lessons or book for a private party. The studio can take groups of up to 16.

Zydeco Music Exhibit

This is the perfect attraction for zydeco music fans. The Zydeco Music Exhibit is in Opelousas, Louisiana the birthplace of Grammy award-winning, zydeco legends such as Terrance Simien and Clifton Chenier. Interpretive panels display a musical timeline beginning with early la-la and the musicians who would later influence zydeco music. This presentation includes seven panels total, that display the legends of zydeco, the history, and information on how Creole sounds developed from the colonial period to the present in South Louisiana.

You can find the Zydeco Music Exhibit at Le Vieux Village Heritage Park, an attraction featuring Opelousas’ most historic places. The exhibit is housed in the Opelousas Visitor Center, also known as the Jarrell House. The center also houses the Jim Bowie Display and a gift store featuring local artwork, cookbooks, and souvenirs.
