Juneteenth Folklife Celebration

2025-08-06T11:52:12-05:00

The Juneteenth Folklife Celebration highlights the folk art, heritage, and traditions of African-American culture in St. Landry Parish. Rebecca Henry, owner of the Creole Heritage Folklife Center, hosts the event. She is a child of sharecroppers, artist, and a wealth of cultural knowledge. This celebration pays tribute to the date when Texas slaves first heard the news of their freedom.

On Saturday under the Farmers Market Pavilion in Opelousas from noon to 4pm, you will be able to listen to live music and traditional dancing. It’s going to be a great time. See original folk art and learn about the heritage and traditions of the region. As this is a family-friendly event, no alcohol is sold or allowed on-site.

Sunset Herb & Garden Festival

2025-07-29T16:01:08-05:00

For over 20 years, the Sunset Garden Club has hosted the Annual Sunset Herb & Garden Festival in Sunset, Louisiana. Over the decades, the wide selection of plants and herbs continues to impress garden enthusiasts. Step outside with your kids, friends, or even spend an afternoon with Mom and Dad. Festival vendors specialize in a variety of plants. Because of this, they can answer your questions about growing and cultivation. Some festival favorites include hibiscus, grasses, fruit trees, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, succulents, roses, and a whole lot more. If that seems overwhelming, don’t worry. Master Gardeners are on-site. These experts present informative presentations while leaving time for a Q&A.

Local crafts, handmade yard art, and herbal bath and body products can also be found on the grounds for sale. First-timers should know that plants go fast. The saying is true; the early bird gets the worm. You may also want to bring a wagon to store plants and items while you shop. This celebration isn’t just for adults. The Kid’s Corner features fun jumps, face-painting, and other engaging activities. Kids can also visit the fairy garden or meet some of the beekeepers or agricultural vendors on site.

The Sunset Herb & Garden Festival is held on the first Saturday in May every year in Sunset. The festival grounds are located on Marie Street, across from the old Sunset High School. Parking is available behind the school, on Sibille Street. Traffic will be directed to this location, so just follow the cars!

Funds raised by this annual festival are used for town beautification projects facilitated by the Sunset Garden Club. Admission is $5, but children 6 and under get in for free. Sunday is always the rain date for this event.

  • Sheryl St.Germaine, a native of New Orleans, she has taught at The University of Texas at Dallas, The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Knox College, Iowa State University and Chatham University, where she served as Director of the MFA in Creative Writing for 14 years. She is the co-founder and former Director of the Words Without Walls Program, which for over ten years trained graduate students to teach creative writing in prisons, jails and rehabilitation centers. Her work has received several awards, including two NEA Fellowships, an NEH Fellowship, the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship, the Ki Davis Award from the Aspen Writers Foundation, and the William Faulkner Award for the personal essay. She was named Louisiana Writer of the Year in November 2018.
  • Gabriel Houck is originally from New Orleans, and his first collection, You or a Loved One, won the 2017 Orison Fiction Prize, judged by David Haynes. Stories from this collection — “The Dot Matrix: and “When the Time Came” — were shortlisted as distinguished stories in the 2017 and 2015 editions of The Best American Short Stories, respectively. Prior to teaching at the University of Louisiana, he served as the Emory University Arts Fellow in Fiction from 2019-2023, and has received scholarships and fellowships from the Tin House Workshops, the Sewanee Writers Workshop, the Vermont Studio Center, Longleaf Writers Conference, the UCROSS Foundation, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Gabriel lives in Lafayette, with a yard that would be perfect for a good rescue dog.
  • Gina Ferrara has maintained a consistent presence in the local poetry scene. She recalls a time before Hurricane Katrina when poetry readings were abundant, with events happening almost every night of the week. One of the most popular, the Maple Leaf Reading Series at the Maple Leaf Bar, is still active and remains the longest-running poetry series in the country. Ferrara even met her husband at a poetry reading, as well as forged many lifelong friendships through readings. She has also curated The Poetry Buffet since 2007, a monthly event featuring various poets, which she considers an essential way to bring poetry to the community. Her involvement in poetry has taken her beyond New Orleans, with opportunities to read and study in cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. She was even awarded a grant to study and perform in Ireland. While grateful for these experiences, Ferrara remains deeply rooted in the local literary community.

Camping trips inspire artist Margo Baker

By Mary Hawkins

Cajuntravel.com

Update on 11/5/2022: Artworks by Ted Bertrand is closing after December 2022. This post will remain up in honor of the years of being a bright spot of creativity in the parish.

Every first Friday of the month at Artworks by Ted Bertrand in Sunset, where Ted displays his bright and colorful art, a new artist shows off their best pieces. This event, which begins after 5 p.m., serves as an opportunity to unwind and appreciate the beauty and creativity that can be found In St. Landry Parish.

To end 2018, artist Margo Baker, wife of Dave Baker of KATC fame, gave the public a glimpse at the motivations and heart behind her pieces.

When approached about a specific piece, a mixed media painted collage of faint purples and blues depicting an abstract forest scene that had been used to promote that month’s event, Baker explained why she had chosen this piece of art as representative of her work. At first, she insisted the reason was because the collage was her most recent piece and truest to her current style. As the night carried on with event goers standing by and admiring her work while sipping on wine and listening to local musicians, she went into more detail, describing the story behind its inspiration.

Homecoming by Margo Baker

Baker recalled a camping trip to her and her husband’s favorite outdoor getaway, an undisclosed campground. It was the first time they had been able to visit the site with just the two of them in years. She spoke about the love and peace and fun they had found hidden away in small moments together. Baker revealed that two other pieces were inspired by that time, and as patrons walked through the artwork pieces of her story revealed itself in every aspect of the display. The names of the pieces were “Homecoming”, “Valentine’s Trail” and “Lover’s Lane”.

Baker’s media ranges from oil paint on a layered collage to large, sculptural pieces. Her style is whimsical and colorful, showing scenes of nature in an abstract way. She plays with texture and unique paper types, including sheet music, for her work. Each one of her creations speaks of an experience many of which take place outdoors reinterpreted in paper, paint, and salvaged paper that speaks to her in the moment.

St. Landry Parish is made up of a collection of stories, people experiencing life in all the different ways possible. Each mural, each painted violin, each piece of art hanging on a wall, as you drink your coffee, is a snapshot of a time in an artist’s life. It is time spent thoughtfully creating, a way to evoke feeling in a viewer. The art and creativity of St. Landry Parish is just another way that this destination is Gumbo for Your Soul.

Visit Artworks by Ted Bertrand, 855 Napoleon Avenue in Sunset from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This parish’s other great art galleries show the heart of these local artists, a thing that cannot be truly captured through words alone.
