Spirits of Main Street Opelousas

Paranormal investigative group, Louisiana Spirits, often visits St. Landry Parish for ghost hunts and to gather evidence in their pursuit of answers. You can read about some of the places they’ve visited and experiences they’ve had in our blog, “Haunted St. Landry.”

However, on January 20th at 6:30pm, during their event Spirits of Main Street Opelousas, you can join the hunt alongside the experts.

They provide the equipment and snacks, and you can record EVPs, perform the Estes Method, participate in prize drawings, and hear from special guests.

Washington Christmas Concert

Get a little Christmas cheer from the Opelousas Queen of Angels Choir. They’ll be performing traditional Christmas music in Washington, Louisiana at St. John Episcopal’s Church on the first Saturday in December at 6pm. Admission is free. You will not want to miss out on this one-of-a-kind event.

Lighting of the Nativity

The holiday season is upon us, and Opelousas Main Street presents a cherished tradition that has been lighting up downtown for over seven decades. On Saturday, November 30, 2024, the heart of downtown Opelousas, Louisiana will come alive with festive cheer at the Lighting of the Nativity on the Courthouse Square.

The event is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. with the official unveiling of the historic nativity scene to take place at dusk. A variety of activities are planned for the event which is presented by Opelousas Main Street, Inc. Santa will be onsite for holiday photos and there will also be train rides, a vendor market set up along Court Street featuring specialty items, art and food, live music entertainment from Our Lady Queen of Angels Choir and a special youth jam session hosted by Louisiana Folk Roots Kids Camp alumni and friends. Nearby families can meet The Grinch inside Sophisticated Look La’ Bellevue on Bellevue Street.

November 30th is also Small Business Saturday, a day to enjoy a delicious lunch and shop for unique gifts, while supporting local small businesses and artists in the area.

This year marks the 71st anniversary of the historic Nativity Scene. The nativity scene at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse Square began in the 1940s. In 1953, a special building was made for the nativity. On Sun., Dec. 6, 1953, the nativity scene on the St. Landry Parish Courthouse Square was unveiled at a special ceremony where Mabel Cools was recognized for soliciting donations used to purchase the nativity figures. Sidney Sandoz was recognized as chairman of the building committee. Robert Dejean served as Master of Ceremonies. After the unveiling, the downtown Christmas lights were turned on. Le Grand Hoorah

Le Grand Hoorah returns to Lakeview Park in  Eunice, Louisiana the last weekend in September. The lineup of bands features some of the hottest acts from around the region. Enjoy Cajun cuisine, including a boucherie, plus French language experiences, dancing, special events, outdoor fun, and optional camping.

“Our festival is about creating and fostering relationships focused on preserving the music, food, language and folk arts of the people of Acadiana,” explained Gilbert “Winky” Aucoin, President of the event’s nonprofit.

The music schedule includes a kickoff party Friday at 8pm with live music. Then on Saturday, music kicks off at 1pm and continues till 8:45 pm. The Hoorah also hosts an authentic Cajun jam 11am – 12:30pm.

Aside from the boucherie and food booths, Saturday’s special events include Opening Ceremonies at noon, French immersion student performances and a French Invocation by Father Jason Vidrine. Attendees can also return Sunday morning for a Catholic French Mass at 9:30 am with Father Kenan Brown.

Le Grand Hoorah is known for preserving and supporting its region’s roots. As part of the nonprofit’s mission to support musical and cultural organizations, proceeds each year are in part donated to various organizations including ACA’s (Acadiana Center for the Arts) Courtney Granger Memorial Award, the Christopher Stafford Memorial Foundation Fund, and Love of People this year.

Visiting the Past

Visit the past at one of the oldest towns in Louisiana’s historic cemetery, Cedar Hill Cemetery in WashingtonAfter the Yellow Fever epidemic of the 1850’s, additional space was needed for the people of Washington to bury their dead. This was how Cedar Hill Cemetery came to be. Both this cemetery and the town’s older one were for people who lived in the area without regard for creed or race.

People who attend this event on October 26th from 5:30pm-6:30pm can visit the past while walking through the beautiful grounds with a candle-lighting and choir performance.

Exposition of Sacred Relics

Experience a teaching and exposition of Sacred Relics at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, Louisiana. Over 150 relics will be shown, some as old as 2,000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of the Twelve Apostles, St. Joseph, St. Maria Goretti, St. John the Baptist, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Faustina Kowalska, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Joan of Arc.

There will also be a fragment of the Veil that belonged to Our Lady and some of the largest remaining pieces of the Wood of the True Cross in the world.

Presented by Fr. Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross.

Opelousas Creole Easter

Come out to Opelousas, Louisiana for the Opelousas Creole Easter Blackpot Cook-Off. This event is taking place at the Life Community Complex, formerly the Indian Hills Country Club. With a mini-trail ride, zydeco dance, and Easter egg hunt for the kids, this event is sure to be a ton of fun. Gates open at 8am, but the ride leaves at noon. No 4-wheelers are allowed. At 4pm, you’ll be able to hear RJ & Kreole Smoove live.

Admission is $10, but kids get in free. If you’d like to try your hand and participate in the cook-off, entry is $20.

NUNU’s Arts & Culture Collective in Arnaudville continues to be a driver for arts and education in the area. It’s the only place in Acadiana where you can meet and discuss in a public setting using the Socratic method. Moderators are present to direct the conversation and all people and thoughts are invited. Join in on the conversation to share invigorating conversation and a great cup of coffee.

An Evening Under the Oaks

On April 22, enjoy an evening under the oaks in Opelousas, Louisiana. At the St. Landry Catholic Church behind the Church Rectory, you can see live music, eat boiled crawfish, and participate in a live auction.

Grab yourself a plate of boiled crawfish while you bid on fabulous items. At 8pm, Three Thirty Seven goes live on stage. They are famous for their wide range of styles with Acadiana influences.

You must be 18 years or over to enter. Admission is $50 and includes dinner, sides, and entry into the door prize raffle.

Spiritual Influence of Classical Architecture & Art in Grand Coteau

This springtime event is a comprehensive tour of the Spiritual Influence of Classical Architecture in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. On Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 9am – 5pm, visit classically inspired buildings such as the St. Borromeo Catholic Church, St. Charles College, the Academy of Sacred Heart, and more.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to identify religious history and classical symbolism in the Jesuit and Sacred Heart religious orders, as well as, recognize classical art in Catholic structures. They will also be able to identify local religious and residential building materials in southern Louisiana dating from 1796 to 1909 and recall proper renovation techniques of antebellum structures.

All attendees will receive take-home information about the St. Charles Borromeo architecture, art, and history. Throughout the tour, professional speakers will provide intimate knowledge of the buildings, sites, people, and cultural significance of these classically-inspired places.

A boxed lunch and afternoon refreshments will be provided. Participants will need their own transportation from each venue.
