Russell’s Food Center

2024-10-21T13:44:05-05:00

Russell’s Food Center is a great place to stock up Cajun food products and take home a taste of Louisiana. George Clifton Coles and his wife, Nora Castille Coles opened a small grocer in 1934 in Arnaudville, selling mostly sugar, rice, flour, and some canned goods. Five generations later, it’s still a family-run grocery store that also offers boudin, plate lunches, and even catering for special events. The bakery offers a wide selection of fresh bread, daily including their brag-worthy olive loaf and sausage jalapeno cheese bread. The meat department is just as enticing with homemade sausage, pork tasso, and even beef tongue. Interested in what’s on the plate lunch menu? You can visit RussellsFoodCenter.com for a list of weekly specials.

The Superette

2024-10-21T14:24:53-05:00

Just look for the giant cow! That’s how you’ll find the Eunice Superette, or maybe it’s the smell of fresh boudin and cracklin in the air that will lead the way. More than 50 years ago, this family-owned and operated full-service slaughterhouse was a small grocer and meat supplier in Eunice, but today, The Superette is Louisiana’s largest meat processing facility. Their retail location clearly lives up to that title with all sorts of specialty meats including alligator, stuffed chickens, lamb, tasso, sausage, crawfish tails, house-made bacon, and even “all-natural” and “grass-fed” products from local farms.

This specialty market and smokehouse even grabbed the attention of Baton Rouge blogger and Food Network guest star, Jay Ducote. Ducote got to see the processing and butchering first hand and maybe even a giant slab of “Dat Guy’s Bacon”. Savor the experience yourself; just don’t forget to bring an ice chest.

Champagne’s Marché

2021-03-10T16:26:57-06:00

Established in 1926, Champagne’s Marche is a family-owned and operated grocery store in Leonville, Louisiana. Located on the Boudin Trail, they serve fresh boudin and cracklins daily and prepare hot Cajun plate lunches for the lunch crowd. Champagnes is mostly known for their sweet, frosted king cakes, a special treat made available just before Mardi Gras. In fact, they received “Best King Cake in Acadiana” in a blind tasting in 2015. Their cakes are readily available in the bakery, but for a custom filling such as amaretto pecan, orders are recommended. Also, check out their review on KingCaker.com where they received 12 out of 12 “babies” for their delicious recipe!

A small plastic “king cake baby” is often hidden into the cake by the buyer. The treat is typically shared among coworkers or friends, and traditionally, the person who finds the baby is responsible for purchasing the next cake. This unique tradition is celebrated during the Epiphany, which is why you’ll find a small toy representing the baby Jesus in your next cake.

Just across the nearby Bayou Teche, is an informational kiosk for bayou adventurers.
