Alita’s House

2025-12-17T15:35:42-06:00

Built in 1908, “Alita’s Cap” in Downtown Eunice, Louisiana has a long history. Over 50 years ago, before the house was split into apartments and the home now used as a bed and breakfast, it was the home of the beautician and well-known local personality, Alita. The house was a gathering place for all manner of folks with an atmosphere of the scandalous. You can read up on more of the house’s lore here.

In 2023, extensive renovations refreshed the property, bringing it to the modern era with bright, light interior and cozy reading nooks. There’s a full kitchen, office space, bathroom, and everything you’d need for a short stay.

Alita’s House is located just a block away from the Historic Liberty Theatre. It’s the perfect place to stay during Mardi Gras season. You can be in the middle of the action for the 5-day Cajun Mardi Gras Festival and traditional Courir de Mardi Gras events that take place right there in downtown.

La Maison Chatrian

2024-08-14T10:32:59-05:00

Experience the joys of a serene getaway at ‘La Maison Chatrian,’ an idyllic vacation rental home in downtown Grand Coteau, Louisiana. This completely renovated circa 1835 residence has a unique history involving two women, Madame Chatrian and Mary Louise Charles.

During the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, Mary Louise Charles and her family fled to the higher ground of Grand Coteau whose name literally translates to “big hill”. Weeks later, after the waters receded and the family prepared to return, Mary Louise was invited by Madame Chatrian to stay as a live-in domestic for the family—an offer she gladly accepted.

Charles never married and spent most of her life working and caring for the Chatrians. Over the years, she became a close companion of Madame Chatrian, especially after Madame was widowed in 1942. When Chatrian passed away in 1978, she left the home and eleven acres of land to Mary. Mary Louise Charles lived to be 101 years old.

The residence has 5-bedrooms, 3 full baths, an additional half bath off of the living room for guests, a full kitchen for preparing home-cooked meals, a large dining room, an inviting sunroom, and a furnished patio with BBQ pit for enjoying meals, making it the ideal spot for large families.

While you’re here, experience Cajun and Creole cultures while visiting local festivals, like the Sweet Dough Pie Festival, antique shops, and restaurants in Acadiana, and live music events.
